Supporting innovative work behavior in times of crisis: Change-oriented leadership and the power of trust, with Yuli Suseno.
Highlights
In times of crisis like the one brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, organizations must remain innovative in order to stay competitive and maintain their strategic position in the market. Innovation during times of crisis, however, demands a different leadership behavior to foster a psychologically safe and meaningful environment for employees to exhibit innovative work behavior. Based on a sample of 304 employees with data collected during the pandemic, our study focuses on the role of change-oriented leadership and the psychological dimension of innovation in the form of employees’ trust in their leaders. Our findings show that change-oriented leadership supports employees’ innovative work behavior, but only when employees trust their leaders. Our study contributes to both the leadership and organizational change literatures by advancing our understanding of the conditions under which employees’ innovative work behavior can be facilitated and supported during and following an exogenous shock like the COVID-19 pandemic.
